Values collecting dust on the wall

Why small things often matter more than big words.

To develop a new corporate culture the management often meets in a beautiful venue for a retreat assisted by a PR-Expert and discusses the best wording for their mission, vision, values and guiding principles. They might have heated discussions, a team-building event in between and finally agree. To cascade it down (as it is often called) the words are spread like a gospel, you find them everywhere. As a kickoff the management might explain in a townhall why this exact wording has been chosen and everybody is impressed. And then? Nothing. The values in their golden frames collect dust on the walls.

Working in small groups on the small things that happen every day is fun, fascinating and very powerful. You can collect the small annoying things and discuss how to change them. You can remember small wonderful things and try to give them more room and increase their number.

You can use roleplays, small movies or intranet posts to spread the findings of the groups and then, at the end, the management (after participating in the same process and contributing their share) can meet and discuss, how to align the small thing-culture with organisation and strategy.

We have tried this approach several times and usually people remember for years the games, the movies and posts. And with that: the small things that matter a lot.
